If you’ve been here a while, you may know that 3am has become one of my most sacred times to listen – when the veils thin and Spirit whispers.
But something new happened the other night…
I awoke and the only sounds I could hear was the creek rushing by and the crickets.
Years ago, I used to get annoyed, worried I wouldn’t get back to sleep – until one of my spiritual teachers, Mother Sarita (don Miguel Ruiz’s mother and a powerful curandera in her own right), told me that the veils between worlds are most open at 3 am.
It’s one of the best times to meditate. As most of the world sleeps, you can more easily slip into listening to your soul and Spirit.
I often use special time to move emotional energy through my body, attune to messages from my Higher Self or Spirit Guides, and receive unexpected creative solutions to whatever challenges I’m facing.
One night recently, I awoke and slipped into my meditation chair. I exhaled deeply.
Like many of us, I’ve been feeling the world’s intensity. Wildfires have surrounded our region. Global and national headlines feel heavy as systems crumble. Friends are moving through personal tragedies. And I’ve been navigating many maze-like decisions in my own life and work.
As I dropped into my felt-sense, the quiet of the night wrapped around me. I touched into that sweet place of Oneness.
But then – beneath the crickets and creek – I noticed a low, mechanical thrum.
It felt man-made. Intrusive. I sensed every animal in the Valley could feel it too.
As I listened more closely, I realized it was the coal train moving through the mountains. Along with it, came the long blast of its horn.
That’s when I realized:
Even in the still of night, even here in my tiny mountain town, there is no escaping the impact of the world.
These times are only getting louder.
So how do we walk through the noise and intensity of modern life with more grace and ease?
Lately, I’m finding I have to deepen even more into listening to my body and soul.
That means creating space for my Sacred Practices – even in the middle of carpools, endless to-dos, and a growing business.
(If you’re looking for your own practices, you can find some here.)
One client recently shared that she had mapped out everything in her life demanding her attention. It was a superhuman list. She felt a mixture of compassion for herself and judgment for not doing more “spiritual work.”
But in truth, she was already living her practice – bringing presence, vulnerability, and softness into her parenting, her partnership, her care for aging parents.
That’s when I offered her a simple 11-second energetic shift. And I’d love to offer it to you too.
11-Second Energetic Shift
- Identify Natural Pause Points
What’s already built into your day? (Brushing teeth, making tea, driving, showering?) - Create an 11-Second Anchor Practice
Pair a moment with a micro-practice:
• Hand on heart and whisper, “I am safe. I am held.”
• Say your tarot or oracle card aloud.
• Breathe into your belly and ask, “Is this fear or intuition?”
• Tap your heart or third eye and say, “Here I am.” - Notice what shifts inside
No matter how, or when, you choose to turn inward, you are sending a powerful signal to your whole system:
I matter.
I can hold myself.
The answers live within.
Here’s to walking this time of great change and awakening together.
